Powder for 45 70

I am new to reloading for the .45-70. For the .45-70 I am casting a 405 grain hard cast (WW + 97%/3% tin/antimony solde, quenched in water), flat nosed chunk of death. Any suggestion on smokeless powder to use? I've heard that fast powders are better for the .45-70, and after perusing my reloading manuals, I am leaning toward Accurate 2015...

Powder for 45 70. Red dot as well as lots of other pistol powders are listed in manuals in loads for rifles especialy in cast bullet loads. No fillers are called for in these loads straight from the manual: (45-70 safe in even the weakest versions) 300 grain jacketed bullet: 2400-24 gr=1560 fps & 13500 psi. 2400-30.6 gr=1905 fps & 24000.

The best 45-70 deer loads are the ones that say .30-30 Winchester on the box. No fuggin way I'm huckin 300-500 grain slugs at deer now that I don't hunt in shotgun zones anymore. People are not using these to limit range. Some loads low 2000s, especially hornady's lever loads, not all that far from 30-30.The data in CBH #3 with the Dacron wad will still be very close with the use of a Dacron filler. I used to run H322 in some 'bear loads' I was all worked up over, but the reality is that H322 never turned in much as far as consistent performance, and consistency is the strong suit of A5744.Another powder that is currently available and gives excellent results is AA2015. 53-54 grs. behind a 400 gr. Speer, Remington (405) or Barnes will deliver 1800+fps and 1 1/2" 100 yd groups.

The 45/70 that I loaded these rounds for is a H&R Handi Rifle which is probably about equivalent in chamber strength as the Marlin 1895. Upon checking my log book, I see that I load the 350 grain Berry's bullet with 48.2 grains of IMR 4064, which is the minimum load in the Hornady manual.Studying that data, it is very evident that Trail Boss is a very POOR powder for the 45-70, yielding very high chamber pressures with only moderate bullet velocities. I shoot a Handi-rifle and a 74 Sharps and have been having trouble getting a clean burning powder. Both 4198 and 5744 seem to leave unburnt powder in the cases or chamber. What my pops used to load in his trapdoor was 3031 with 405gr cast and jacketed. I'm upping the pressures a tad and going with more than the 37.5gr of 3031 he used a lot/me too (a mild 1200-1300fps load)., For the 45Colt, depends on how hot you want to load them...the powders in the medium-slow area may be worth a try. Herco, N350, N344, or N347 (those Vihtavauri powders may not be easy to find). AA 5744 works for the Colt and 45-70.
